Osun Assembly Calls For Immediate Clearing Of Drainages, Proper Waste Disposal

The Osun State House of Assembly has called for immediate and sustained action to clear blocked drainages, evacuate refuse heaps and ensure thorough cleaning of the state.
This is contained in a statement signed by Olamide Tiamiyu,Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker,Osun State House of Assembly.
The call was made on Monday when the Speaker, *Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun*, alongside Honourable Members, met with the Commissioner for Environment, the Permanent Secretary and heads of relevant agencies under the Ministry at the Assembly Complex, Osogbo.
The meeting, according to the Assembly, was part of its oversight responsibilities on environmental sanitation, effective waste management, and overall cleanliness of communities across the state.
Speaking during the meeting, Rt. Hon. Egbedun expressed concern over heaps of dirt on major roads and blocked and neglected drainages across the state, stressing that effective drainage systems are critical to preventing flooding, protecting lives and property, and maintaining a healthy environment.
He urged the Ministry and its agencies to ensure proper evacuation and disposal of refuse, particularly in major towns and cities, markets, residential areas and other public spaces.
“Waste management must go beyond occasional clean-up exercises and become a sustained and properly coordinated responsibility,” the Speaker said.
Egbedun also called for a comprehensive approach that would involve regular cleaning of major streets and public spaces, noting that a clean environment is essential to public health, economic activities and the overall well-being of citizens.
He charged the Ministry, its agencies and relevant local government authorities to collaborate and develop effective mechanisms for monitoring sanitation activities and ensuring timely evacuation of refuse.
The Speaker further called for greater public enlightenment and enforcement of environmental regulations, adding that government efforts would only be sustainable when citizens, businesses and communities take collective responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean.
Earlier, the Commissioner, Permanent Secretary and heads of the relevant agencies briefed the Assembly on their activities, challenges and ongoing interventions in maintaining environmental sanitation across the state.
The House assured the Ministry of its support, but emphasized the need for concrete, measurable and sustained action to make Osun cleaner, healthier and safer for all residents.
