Tragedy In OAU As Final Year Student Commits Suicide, Police Commence Investigation

*ILE-IFE -* Tragedy struck at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, as a final year student of the institution has allegedly committed suicide.
The deceased has been identified as *Oluwole Oluwaseun*, a male final-year student of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.
In a press statement released on Tuesday, September 16, 2026, by the Public Relations Officer of the University, *Abiodun Olarewaju*, the institution said it received information about the emergency involving the student at about 1:30 p.m. on Monday, September 15, 2026, at an apartment within the Damico Area, Ooni Layout, Ile-Ife.
According to the statement, upon receipt of the information, the University’s Quick Response and Security (QRS) Team immediately proceeded to the location.
The Nigeria Police was also contacted, and officers from the ‘A’ Division, Moore, Ile-Ife, joined the University’s security personnel at the scene.
“The student was subsequently conveyed to the University Health Centre, where he was certified dead by a medical doctor,” the statement said.
The Management said it is deeply concerned by the circumstances surrounding the death and has handed over relevant information and items recovered from the scene to the Police for further investigation.
The Police have since commenced investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
The Vice Chancellor, *Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire*, has extended the heartfelt condolences of the University Management to the family, friends, classmates and colleagues of the deceased at this difficult moment.
The VC also expressed concern for students and members of the University community who may be emotionally affected by the tragedy.
The University urged members of the community to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information or speculations concerning the circumstances of the death, as investigation is ongoing.
The Management further encouraged any student experiencing severe emotional distress, relationship difficulties, financial pressures or other personal challenges to seek help promptly from trusted persons and appropriate University support structures.
“No student should feel that he or she has to confront overwhelming difficulties alone,” the Vice Chancellor reaffirmed.
The Management assured that appropriate authorities are handling the matter and that further information, where necessary, will be communicated through official channels.
