The newly converted officers in the Department of Community Development, Education, Information,Youth, Sports and Culture,in the Local Government Service of Osun State, have been admonished to keep abreast of new trends and developments in their chosen profession.

Osun State Head of Service, Mr Ayanleye Aina gave the admonition in Osogbo at an orientation programme organized by the Local Government Service Commission for the newly converted/advanced officers in the council areas.

While emphasizing the need for training and retraining of public servants, Mr Aina, who is apparently conversant with the nitty gritty of community development, observed that things are no longer what it used to be in the practice of the profession.

He then counselled the community workers:” In view of the fact that community development like every other sector is dynamic, there are new trends which you have to imbibe. So, training is very key in order to forge ahead in this profession. When you embrace training,it will boost your capacity for enhanced productivity. You therefore need to go on courses and engage in regular self development in order to get better equipped for the work.”

Mr Aina who also stressed the need to keep to service ethics like discipline, anonymity, punctuality and loyalty, which according to him, transcends merit, alerted that the authority would monitor them from time to time, to ensure that they are on the right track.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Coordinating Director in the Local Government Service Commission,Barr.Lekan Babalola had appreciated the State helmsman for his monumental achievements within his 100 days in office, confessing that Governor Adeleke keeps demonstrating that he is indeed a workers’ Governor.

Barr.Lekan Babalola asserted:”Governance is about the community. There is no governance without the community – no people,no governance” He then advocated the need to strengthen the local government system in order to impact positively on the community as the fulcrum of holistic development.

While pointing out that the trending thing in the world today is sustainable development, the LGSC Career Head charged the new officers that,as future leaders in the service, they must be forward looking on how to ensure sustainable development so that the progress made today will not jeopardize the future generation.

In his remarks, the Chairman,Forum of Departments of Social Development, Education, Information, Youth Sports and Culture,Prince Shadrach Ologbenla, who spoke through the Secretary of the Association, Comrade Bukola Elufadejin, acknowledged that the department has never had it so good.He therefore challenged the newly inducted officers to see the programme as an opportunity to grasp the rudiments of the profession in addition to the expectation of the Local Government Service Commission from them.

Lectures delivered at the orientation programme by the trio of Mr Benson Oluyemi,Jide Falade and Adekunle Adewumi were: Ethics of the Public Service with emphasis on Local Government Administration; Ethics, Values and Diversity in Social Work as well as Roles and Challenges of Social Workers, respectively.
