ISOWN Organises workshop for members in Osun

Institute of Social Work of Nigeria, Osun State Chapter has organized second edition of workshop for its members across the state.

Osun State Chairperson of the institute, Mrs Esther Silas in his opening remark at the event held at NUJ press centre, Olu Osungbohun hall, charged members who are change agents to be conscious of social vices bedeviling the society and play active roles in finding lasting solutions to some of these domestic menace through regular advocacy visit.

The State Coordinator of the institute, Alhaji Yakub Oni while delivering the first Lecture titled: ‘Creating a world for all ages’ impressed it upon members to ensure that all strata of the society irrespective of their ages are not denied of basic welfare packages as required by the law.
Barrister Kayode Titiloye, one of the discussants identified gender based violence in the face of law and how social workers should play their roles in stemming the tide of the menace in our society.

According to him, traditional practices against women; forced marriage, abortion and female genital mutilation among others are the burning issues begging for attention of social workers.

Mrs Ayofe Iyabo, head of Osun Social Cash Transfer Unit in her lecture identified myriads of problems confronting the nation, which according to her,’ has affected home keeping and wellbeing of the people’.

She therefore charged social workers to advocate for economic justice and promote welfare of the less privileged.

The Coordinating Director,Ministry of Women Affairs,Mr Jide Falade identified other areas of chosen professional practices which include Community development, adult education, sociology ,psychology and medical social welfare and urged practitioners to rise up to use their professional expertise in reshaping Nigeria to a better society.

The Institute which got the approval of house of representative on 19th March,2020; senate approval on 28th June 2020 and assent of President Muhammadu Buhari on 20th August,2022 is aimed at ‘building professional guidance to members for enhanced service delivery in the chosen area of the institute professional practice’.
